Things the Fashion Industry Needs to Change 2018

It gets quite annoying to feel that we've come so far from the negative and then we turn around to see that we have only taken a single step. Here are things the fashion industry needs to change!

Size

Fat shaming and skinny shaming is quite ridiculous in my opinion. We all have different bodies and the fact that a big handful of America's population is obese and can't clothes from everyday stores is upsetting. As a fashion designer wanna-be, I know that you can't mix work with personal preferences. It is fine if you like skinny girls more, that doesn't mean you get to shame the other girls and make them feel worthless for not being able to fit your clothes! If a body is not healthy that does not mean that they have not come a long way and are trying to get healthy. I believe they deserve to shop at everyday clothing stores just as the rest of us do.

A lot of companies say they do not make clothing for plus size or obese because it is unhealthy and they do not want to promote that. I understand this in a way but what bothers me is that they promote underweight models which isn't healthy either! Also, plus size models aren't always unhealthy! If you can promote underweight models then you can promote overweight models!

Religon

In my fashion company, I am going to have clothes for all different religions so everyone can shop at a nice designer store and not have to worry about a hijab being in there or the clothing not meeting Mormon dress code. It gets annoying when fashion companies do that. Just because most of your audience can wear it doesn't mean you should only advertise to that specific crowd! They loose tons of respect and money due to this.

Ethnicty

I love Bethann Hardison for her great work as a model and contribution to minorities being on the runway. We need more people like her! The fashion companies need to stop showing mostly Caucasian models and add diversity to their runways and magazines. You can't advertise it to minorities and expect them to buy it if they don't see anyone in the magazines like them. The fashion industry makes a lot of people feel insecure and as a black girl I have felt the need to be white or "pure" because I felt as though I was dirty. We shouldn't make people feel like this.

Gender

It is 2018, and the fashion industries seem not to understand that. There are men who are feminine and feel more comfortable in feminine clothes while there are females who are have a masculine personality and where masculine clothes. This doesn't always mean they are transgender, it could just mean your a tomboy for example. I don't like that the fashion industry says female clothing and male clothing. There should be feminine clothing, masculine clothing, and gender neutral clothing. You can't put the whole population in two categories and expect it to end well. People don't always identify with the category you put in front of them.

This may be small, but I feel like it is a respectful thing to do towards the people and those communities.

We need to work together to stop the big fashion industries from violating these things. Everyone deserves to feel beautiful and loved even if we don't agree on the same thing. Spread the word!
